Module Outline

This module develops engineering practice skills while enhancing students’ employability through applied, hands-on learning. It integrates mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering principles with a focus on computer-aided design (CAD), electronic design, circuit prototyping, and systems integration. Students will gain skills to design, build and test an engineering system or device as part of their learning journey. Alongside technical competencies, the module emphasises professional skills such as problem-solving, teamwork, communication skills, and appreciation of the inclusive engineering framework. Through industry talks and research lab visits, this module provides first-hand insights into engineering careers and practical experience in fields like robotics, automation, mechanics, and electronics.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate practical skills in mechanical and electronic Computer Aided Design

Apply appropriate codes of practice and industry standards considering the inclusive engineering framework

Interpret component specifications, application notes and datasheets to select appropriate electronic components and processes, recognising their limitations

Collaborate effectively, as part of a team, to design and build an integrated electro-mechanical solution to a simple engineering problem
