Full Module Description

Engineering a sustainable future – from net-zero manufacturing and waste-heat recovery to clean energy systems – depends on understanding and controlling heat transfer. This module develops your ability to analyse heat transfer by conduction and radiation, design heat exchangers, and evaluate thermal stress, grounded in the materials behaviour that determines how real components perform and fail. Through laboratory work, computational modelling, and case studies, you will apply these techniques, building the analytical judgement, digital fluency, and communication skills expected of a professional engineer.

Analyse heat transfer accounting for how material and surface properties determine thermal performance. [AHEP4: C1, C2]

Deploy established techniques of analysis to engineering problems in heat transfer by conduction, Apply established techniques to solve engineering problems in steady-state and transient conditions. [AHEP4: C1, C2, C3]

Evaluate the role of heat transfer in engineering applications and critique engineering decisions against wider considerations. [AHEP4: C4, C6/M6, C7]

Interpret results obtained from investigations and quantify uncertainty and communicating results in the form expected of a professional engineer. [AHEP4: C17]
