Module Outline

This module provides an introduction to computer network concepts and techniques, as well as elementary software development principles. The module introduces the fundamentals of packet switching technologies as used in the internet. Emphasis is placed on core Internet protocols such as IP and TCP and covers network access technologies, protocol design, layering, LANs, routing, switching and congestion control.

Understand the architectural principles of computer networking

Have a critical understanding of the purpose and workings the TCP/IP protocol stack

Design and implement simple communication protocols based on the Internet model of communication outside the context in which they were first studied

Understand the principles of network application programming with sockets and be able to develop network applications
