This course is set at Level 7 (Masters) in the national Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.
Course learning outcomes
Critically assess, compare, and appraise diverse disciplinary perspectives on sex, gender, violence and conflict and their relationships across anthropology, international relations, law, and sociology, and the fields of development studies and gender studies.
Analyse key theoretical and policy debates around the gendered dynamics and experiences of conflict, violence and peace.
Evaluate contemporary policy agendas, diplomatic, development and advocacy interventions related to gender and racial equality, gender-based violence, queer rights, and women, peace and security.
Demonstrate a critical understanding of feminist, decolonial, and queer theories across Northern and Southern perspectives and apply these theories in original oral and written analysis.
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of theoretical and practical debates in at least one other thematic area related to the course content (e.g. gender and development, conflict and security, peacebuilding and reconciliation, humanitarianism and human rights, sexuality and the body, social change and resistance, migration and refugees).
Construct and articulate concise and structured arguments on complex issues around gender, violence, and development based on a critical assessment of the literature and original analysis.
Design and conduct an original and independent research project on themes of gender, violence and development through identifying, collating and critically analysing relevant primary and secondary resources.
Assess and apply theoretical and methodological frameworks for conducting ethical and responsible research on gender, violence and injustice.
Work collectively as well as independently to apply knowledge on gender, violence and development.
Demonstrate professional skills in engaging in dialogue and debate around gender and social justice in local and global development, government, and civil society sectors.
