Module Outline

This module introduces the fundamental concepts and techniques in biological sequence analysis, emphasizing their use in addressing contemporary biological questions. Key topics include methods for comparing DNA, RNA, and protein sequences, as well as understanding their evolutionary relationships and functional implications. Students will also learn about how machine learning and other AI techniques are utilised in the analysis of genomic and protein sequences.

Through hands-on exercises, students will engage with major bioinformatics platforms such as Ensembl to explore genomic data and perform sequence-based queries. Practical sessions also include programming challenges that strengthen skills in analysing and interpreting sequence data, setting the stage for more advanced genomic analysis including an introduction to cancer genomics.

The latter part of the module will focus on next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. Students will gain insight into the design and application of NGS experiments, alongside exposure to computational tools for managing and analysing large-scale sequence data. This includes training in python/R and Bioconductor, as well as experience using Unix-based software tailored to genomic workflows, and an introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC).

Module learning outcomes

Critically evaluate the concepts of sequence similarity, homology, and alignment to explain their relevance to comparative genomics and molecular evolution.

Apply dynamic programming algorithms in biological sequence analysis, to interpret alignment outputs in a biological context.

Design and execute bioinformatics workflows, deploying appropriate tools and methodologies, for the critical analysis of genomics data.

Critically evaluate how AI applications are utilised in the analysis of genomic and protein sequences.
