Module Outline

This module focuses on the analysis of gene expression and protein biology, with particular emphasis on transcriptomics, proteomics, and protein structure prediction. You will explore transcriptome-wide profiling techniques such as RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to investigate gene expression dynamics, regulatory pathways, and/or cell-specific transcriptional responses. Practical sessions provide hands-on experience with transcriptomic data analysis using R or python, Bioconductor, and Unix-based workflows.

In the proteomics component, you'll be introduced to experimental methods for identifying and quantifying proteins in biological samples. These are complemented by computational techniques for processing and interpreting large-scale proteomic datasets, with applications to systems biology and biomarker discovery.

The module also covers protein structure analysis, including the use of advanced tools like AlphaFold for high-accuracy prediction of 3D protein structures from amino acid sequences. You will learn how structural insights contribute to understanding protein function, interactions, and drug targeting.

Module learning outcomes

Demonstrate a critical understanding of transcriptomics, proteomics, and protein structure prediction, including the use of AI, to study complex biological systems and disease mechanisms.

Apply advanced computational, statistical, and predictive modelling approaches to analyse and interpret high-throughput biological data.

Critically evaluate structure–function relationships in proteins through predictive modelling and interpret their implications in biological and biomedical contexts.

Design integrative bioinformatics strategies for hypothesis-driven research.
