Module Outline

This module introduces how race, gender, sexuality, class, disability, and other social identities shape and are shaped by technology. Students will examine the historical, cultural, and societal forces behind algorithmic bias, and consider who is included and excluded in datasets and computational systems. Students will also develop a critical lens to examine emerging technologies, understanding the implications of developments in AI and big data on race, gender, and sexuality. Seminars draw on critical perspectives and histories of resistance in computing, while workshops offer hands-on experience with creative coding, data curation, and storytelling. Students will develop critical digital literacy and practical skills to question dominant narratives in computing.

Module learning outcomes

Evaluate debates and approaches to techno-feminism

Develop and evaluate practice and research skills in computational practice (e.g. coding, hacking)

Produce self-directed praxis work with reference to a range of scholarly sources and conceptual frameworks.

Demonstrate a critical awareness of the theoretical implications of computational practice in various cultural contexts.

Collaborate productively in the planning and execution of practice work.
