Membership terms and conditions
Find out more about our membership terms and conditions.
General terms
- Student annual memberships are not rolling, rather pro-rata, so if you purchase an annual membership from September onwards it will automatically end on 31 August.
- Four-month memberships are equal to up to 123 days.
- Three-month memberships are equal to up to 92 days or 13 weeks.
- Sussex Sport may, at its sole discretion, consider requests for refunds, membership freezes, or cancellations in exceptional circumstances. Evidence may be requested and approval is not guaranteed.
- Sussex Sport staff memberships are open to staff employed by the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, Sussex Food, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Co-op, and SEF.
- Staff employed by the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ can pay for membership via salary deduction, subject to contract.
- Staff paying by salary deduction are committed to paying for the full membership. Cancellations can only be made as per points above or by presenting evidence - i.e. leaving the University.
- Alumni members include ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ graduates, external students, retired staff, businesses on campus and student/staff families.
- Annual membership fees can be paid in a one-off payment or by monthly instalments for public/alumni members. If paying by part payments, each month must be paid regardless of use and the monthly payment amount will be rounded up dependent on the one off actual annual fee, when divided by 12, to cover administration costs.
- Public/alumni members must give at least one calendar month notice if terminating membership and must be a member for at least three months before being eligible to cancel membership. If you join during the month the full month fee will be payable.
- Members are required to give written notice to Sussex Sport of any changes to contact information. We will assume that all correspondence sent by us has been received within 5 working days of sending.
- Memberships are personal to the member and cannot be transferred, shared, or used by another person. Sussex Sport reserves the right to suspend or terminate memberships without refund where misuse is suspected or confirmed.
- All additional membership benefits are subject to availability and refunds will not be given for sessions that are not taken up.
- Sussex Sport may temporarily close facilities or alter services due to maintenance, events, health, and safety requirements, staffing issues, or circumstances outside its reasonable control. Where a closure exceeds five consecutive days, Sussex Sport may, at its discretion, freeze or extend memberships to reflect the period of closure.
- Members are responsible for their behaviour and that of their guests. Sussex Sport reserves the right to refuse entry, suspend access, or terminate membership without refund where a member or guest behaves in a manner that is unsafe, abusive, threatening, unlawful, disruptive, or contrary to these terms and conditions.
- Photography, filming, and recording are prohibited within Sussex Sport facilities unless prior written permission has been obtained from Sussex Sport or the University's Digital and Creative Media Team. Membership data will be used anonymously for usage analysis purposes.
- BUCS UNIversal gym membership is open to annual Sussex Sport Unlimited student and staff members only. This is an external offer with BUCS and is therefore subject to changes beyond our control. Sussex students are unable to use their BUCS UNIversal gym membership at the University of Brighton, and vice versa. We will aim to inform eligible members of any other major alterations to the scheme.
- Personal information will be processed in accordance with the University's Privacy Notice and applicable UK data protection legislation. Membership and usage data may be analysed in anonymised form to help improve services.
- Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability where such liability cannot legally be excluded under applicable law. Subject to this, Sussex Sport and the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ shall not be liable for any indirect or consequential loss arising from the use of the facilities or services.
