Introduction to Social Development (033IDA)

30 credits, Level 7 (Masters)

Autumn teaching

On this module, you’ll explore the field of social development and examine a number of key concepts.

For each topic, you’ll look at:

• how different concepts have been applied in aid policy and practice
• the debates and controversies they have given rise to.

Drawing on analyses of case studies and examples across different countries, you’ll critically reflect on the theoretical, practical and ethical implications of each idea. Through this, you’ll develop your own views about the applications and potential impacts of these concepts in different social contexts.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 400 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 367 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
