Acting: The Process (Q3210)

Why Act? How do key approaches to actor training reflect cultural change? How can you build a character? How can you express your creative individuality?

This module considers the processes of acting through hybrid lecture/workshops. You’ll consider these questions through historical, philosophical, scientific and political contexts, recognisng the ways in which the actor might be positioned as a cultural worker. We’ll develop an embodied creative practice through acting workshops, centering you as both actor and instrument.

Some of the acting processes we will explore include:

  • relationality
  • breath
  • body/voice
  • imagination
  • emotions
  • approaches to text.

We’ll draw on a variety of actor training approaches, giving space for you to develop a reflective practice, alongside regular tutor/peer feedback and working with a variety of texts. Assessment will include critical reflective writing and the creation of an acting showreel, which can be used for auditions.

Contact hours and workload

This module is approximately 210 hours of work. This breaks down into about 33 hours of contact time and about 177 hours of independent study. The University may make minor variations to the contact hours for operational reasons, including timetabling requirements.

We regularly review our modules to incorporate student feedback, staff expertise, as well as the latest research and teaching methodology. We’re planning to run these modules in the academic year 2026/27. However, there may be changes to these modules in response to feedback, staff availability, student demand or updates to our curriculum.
